Why is tire rotation important?

Mechanic with Tires

Rotating the tires on your car, truck, or SUV is a critical part of your maintenance schedule and should not be overlooked. Why rotate tires and what does rotating tires do? Simply put, regular tire rotation ensures that all of the tires on your vehicle experience even tread wear, which helps to maintain optimum traction on Edmonton-area roads, while improving safety and extending the life of your tires. Learn more about what rotating your tires does and how often to rotate tires in this guide from the auto service team at Capital GMC Buick.

How Does Drivetrain Affect Tire Rotation?

Accelerating, braking, turning, and cornering on the roads in and around Millwoods will eventually wear down your tires. In addition, depending on the drivetrain your vehicle has, the tire tread will wear out at different rates. That’s why it is important to regularly check your tire tread depth. Take a look at how different drivetrains can affect tire tread wear:

  • Front-wheel drive vehicle: With FWD, engine power is delivered directly to the front wheels, which are also responsible for steering while taking on most of the stopping force, so they will wear out faster.
  • Rear-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is directed to the rear wheels, which will wear out faster than the front tires, although at a generally slower rate since they are not used for steering.
  • All-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is more evenly distributed, but the rear tires will still wear out faster.
  • Intelligent all-wheel drive systems: These advanced all-wheel drive systems can direct power to individual wheels while driving around a curve for better cornering, which will result in uneven wear over time.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

On average, tires should be rotated every six months or every 8,000 kilometres to 13,000 kilometres. You should check your owner’s manual to find the recommended tire rotation schedule for your specific vehicle. If you’re still unsure about how often to rotate your tires or if you have additional questions, feel free to contact our service centre.

What Happens if I Don’t Rotate My Tires?

If you don’t keep up to date with your routine tire rotation schedule, the tires will wear out faster than they should. Some of the results of neglecting to rotate and replace tires at the proper time include:

  • Poor traction and skidding on the roads
  • More rapid deterioration of brake pads
  • Flat tires and blowouts
