Identifying the Cause of Water Leaking from Under a Car

If you are concerned about your car leaking water, you can try the following to determine where the liquid is coming from and if if you should bring your vehicle into our Service Centre:

  • Place a sheet of paper under the leak. If the fluid is blue, green, or yellow, it is most likely coolant, not water. Check the coolant level, if it’s low, you should schedule a service appointment with us as soon as you can. A car leaking fluid can lead to big problems.

  • Is there a significant amount of water leaking from your exhaust? It’s possible that there’s a blown gasket causing coolant to burn along with fuel. If this is the case, you’ll also see white smoke streaming from the exhaust pipe.

  • Water leaking from under the car near the front tires may indicate that the windshield wiper fluid reservoir has a crack or puncture. Check their windshield wiper fluid level.

What KInd of Fluid is Leaking from My Car?

Is your car leaking fluid? The color will indicate what type of fluid it is and where the problem may be.

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid

  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant

  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant

  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator

  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid

  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil

  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant

  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
